Big Kid® Independence

6/3/2008 | by Jennifer James

It’s often hard to let go and let your child be an independent individual! July is a month that celebrates independence, which makes me think about my children during their big milestones like potty training. These Big Kid® moments have made me so proud and will continue to throughout the years.

During potty training, when my daughter’s accidents became minimal and she was on the home stretch, I watched her become self-sufficient by starting to let her wash her hands by herself, then flush and eventually wipe herself. Using this technique really helped to make her feel “grown-up” in the bathroom, and made things much easier for me!

To give kids more potty training independence, I always tell parents to:
  • Use tools like PULL-UPS® with Easy Open Sides to help the transition to training pants from diapers. Using PULL-UPS® allowed my daughter to feel like a big kid because they look and feel like real underwear.
  • Praise your child — using rewards, incentives or verbal praise — to remind them you recognize their efforts and are proud.
  • Relax — give your child time to learn their new skills and grow into a potty routine.
