Start? When the Time is Right

When it looks like “all systems go” for your child, start gathering up the essential tools. Have a little kick-off celebration to introduce these tools and your child’s big start.

Here’s our list of potty training basic equipment:

Potty Seat When it comes to using the toilet, it's best to start small. Potty chairs are best for most kids, but a potty seat for the big toilet can work with a little assistance and a stepstool.

TIP: Give your child some ownership in the “new potty”. Wrap it up as a present, or personalize it, or decorate it with stickers!

Rewards Rewards and praise can work wonders. Find what motivates your child–a favorite treat, small prizes, a fun progress chart, a phone call to a grandparent–and of course, high-fives and hugs.

TIP: Different levels of rewards are appropriate for different levels of success. If a reward no longer motivates your child, try a new one to help keep interest high.

Learning Materials Potty training books and videos are a great way to introduce your child to potty training and help him or her stay interested.

TIP: Some favorites include Bye, Bye Diapers, I Can Go Potty, I Have to Go!, I'm a Potty Champion! and Once Upon a Potty.

TIP: Personalize your very own storybook right now–free!

Training Pants Training pants are a great way to introduce potty training and help keep your child motivated to become a Big Kid®.

TIP: It’s best to use them consistently–switching between diapers and training pants can be confusing and slow progress.

PULL-UPS® training pants are a great way to encourage your child's independence and say loud and clear–you’re a Big Kid®. PULL-UPS® training pants have Big Kid® underwear-like designs for that motivation to stay dry like older kids.

TIP: Use PULL-UPS® Training Pants with Learning Designs® that fade when wet to help beginners learn the difference between wet from dry.
