Load on the Praise and Rewards

“Potty trainers thrive on positive reinforcement. Praise and rewards can help kids feel more comfortable with new skills, keep interest high and build confidence.”

It’s a Celebration Of course you’ll make a big deal out of major accomplishments, but don’t forget the little milestones that also deserve a little fanfare:

  • Using the correct potty words
  • Sitting on the potty chair (clothes on)
  • Putting on training pants
  • Pulling down pants and sitting on the potty
  • Wanting to be changed after an accident
  • Learning the feeling (even body language) of when to go potty
  • Flushing
  • Perfect Aim

Rewards Program What you decide to reward your child with is as individual as your child. Don’t forget the simple ones like hugs and high-fives. A few ideas:

  • Appropriate treats
  • Post a Progress Chart
  • Stickers or other small prizes
  • A special meal
  • A phone call to (or from) Grandma and Grandpa
  • A special toy
  • A game
  • A favorite video
  • Big Kid® Certificate

Do Tell Keeping a positive tone, tell (don’t ask) your child when it’s time to go potty. It’s a good way to avoid getting a determined “No” in reply–the natural reaction of a busy toddler at play.

Share the Plan Make sure everyone who cares for your child understands and supports your potty training plan. A consistent approach is best, and more people on the team praising and rewarding can make the training process more effective and fun. Just so everyone’s on the same page.

The Lure of Real Undies Later in training, you may want to motivate your child with real underwear of their choice. Set a goal of being dry so many days, and reward your child when he or she reaches that goal. TIP: For that final stretch of training, consider motivating your child to finish up by offering an Im a Big Kid® Now! Party.
